Home Security Tips

Tips on some home security basics

  • Always leave a radio or TV on when your out, as a burglar will put his ear to your door to see if there is anyone in
  • If someone comes to your door asking to use the phone to call a mechanic or the police, keep the door locked and make the call yourself if you’re unsure
  • Avoid announcing your vacation on your Facebook page or other sites online. It’s easier than you think to look up your address.
  • Placing your prized possessions in prominent view is just like advertising for a would-be thief. Curtains with dark shades should be put up in rooms that contain your valuable items. Do this to make sure that no one can outside your window see where your valuables are placed
  • Always supervise repair people when they come into your home
  • Leaving a window open just a crack during the day is a way to let in a little fresh air. To a Burglar, it’s an invitation.
  • A Burglar won’t have enough time to break into the safe where you keep your valuables. But if it’s not bolted down, they’ll take it with them
  • If the entrances to your home are dark, consider installing lighting with an infrared detector. Most thieves don’t want to be observed trying to get in a door
  • Don’t leave ladders or tools in easy reach in your garden, by doing so your helping the burglar get into your home
  • When someone calls to your door always ask for ID
  • When commissioning someone to work in your home always use a reliable, traceable source of contractor
