Did you know that the majority of theft from cars and homes is committed by an opportunist thief? To ensure that your car or home is not attractive to thieves it's important to bear some key tips in mind. The Fingal Joint Policing Committee (JPC) is a partnership between Fingal County Council, the Gardai and the Community. At a series of recent public meetings held by the JPC, Gardai advised residents how to protect their homes and property against theft.
Firstly, do not leave valuables like hand bags, sat navs, cameras, laptops or iPods in your car or van. Do not lock them into your boot in public view either. Opportunist thieves are attracted to homes for a number of reasons. A build up of post indicates that a property is unoccupied. Open windows, no alarm or hidden keys are also a draw to thieves, as is high vegetation and easy access to the rear of a house. Thieves are particularly attracted to the homes of the elderly and can often pose as bogus officials to steal from the vulnerable. Be sure to advise your elderly neighbours to always ask for ID and if in doubt. Keep them out. Above all, be proactive is securing your property.
